Road bike tour between German Wine Route and Black Forest

Wine can be grown only where it is really beautiful. It needs a mild climate, plenty of sun, and a slightly hilly terrain with little wind. Add some ancient culture, lovely towns, and quaint villages and you get this tour - through some of Europe‘s most beautiful holiday regions: Rhenish Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Baden, and the Alsace. For centuries, excellent wine has been cultivated in this region and also a delectable and varied cuisine, which ranges from „Saumagen“ to Alsatian „Gourmet cuisine“. It is more than one can hope for. On your way you nd terric destinations with a charm of their own, e.g. Mainz, the German Wine Route and its countless romantic wine-growing villages, Baden-Baden and Strasbourg- only to mention a few cultural highlights. This is a tour to relax, have fun, and get to know the country and its people!

TOUR PROFILE: This tour for bon vivants corresponds to level II. Most of the time you cycle in slightly undulating terrain, mainly on little frequented side roads. A basic level of fitness is required. On this individual tour each cyclist can follow his own pace and can stop wherever it is beautiful. Persons uncertain about their level of fitness may consider to take a day offinstead of participating in the round tours.


Tour description:

DAY 1: ARRIVAL TO MAINZ

Individual arrival to Mainz (Germany). This historic city on the Rhine with its countless beautiful sights, such as the Cathedral of St. Martin, the Gutenberg Museum of printing and the Roman theatre, makes you look forward to this agreeable tour.

DAY 2: MAINZ - BAD DÜRKHEIM (APPROX. 80 KM // 450 ALTITUDE)

The first stage of this road bike trip starts with through the Rhenish  Hesse vineyards in a leisurely way. Nice little villages and a slightly hilly terrain lead you to the German Wine Route.

DAY 3: BAD DÜRKHEIM - PALATINATE ROUND TRIP - BAD DÜRKHEIM (APPROX. 90 KM // 475 ALTITUDE)

On this bike day the terrain is a little bit more demanding. Beautiful views over the vineyards as well as nice medieval towns provide a lot of variation.

DAY 4: BAD DÜRKHEIM - BAD BERGZABERN (APPROX. 85 KM // 375 ALTITUDE)

At the centre of the German Wine Route, in Neustadt, the route takes you through the Palatinate Forest on pleasant roads with little trac. This is an area of outstanding beauty. It is here that you will be able to really let go and simply enjoy cycling.

 DAY 5: BAD BERGZABERN - ALSACE ROUND TRIP - BAD BERGZABERN (APPROX. 85 KM // 375 ALTITUDE)

This tour day starts on lovely side roads in the Palatinate Forest. You will enjoy nice panoramic views in the hilly Alsace region. The nal destination for the day will be the Southern Wine Route. 

DAY 6: BAD BERGZABERN - BADEN-BADEN (APPROX. 90 KM // 250 ALTITUDE)

Former military roads will lead you to the Rhine. From there, you will follow the foothills of the Black Forest to the spa town Baden Baden. The springs here have been known for more than 2,000 years and their composition resembles that of the Roman baths of the 3rd century. The water at the baths of „Caracalla-Therme“ spa is rich in sodium chloride and comes from artesian wells 5.900 ft. under the mountain. You will want to indulge yourself!

DAY 7: BADEN-BADEN - STRASBOURG (APPROX. 85 KM // 230 ALTITUDE)

Through the Baden Vineland and Baden Wine Route, you will cycle back to the Rhine and the Alsace region. From there its only a few kilometres until you reach Strasbourg, which is one of the most beautiful and ultimate European cities. It is where France and Germany „collide“, sitting right on the border of the two countries. It can be hard to discern which country you are truly in. Be sure to visit the Strasbourg Cathedral, one of Europe‘s most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture.
