Alps Adria Villach - Grado

The starting point of this bicycle holiday is Villach, located on the border of the Klagenfurt-basin, at the confluence of the rivers „Drau“ and „Gail“. Very soon you will have to say goodbye to Austria, before the bicycle tour continues to Italy. The region Friuli-Venezia Giulia doesn’t only offer scenic variety, but also invites you to a foray through the cultural variety of the region. This mixture of the cultures reflects itself also in the cuisine: Alpine- Austrian, Slovenian and Venetian influences characterise the gastronomic offer of the region. Moving on from the peaks of the Carnic Alps you cycle on the south side of the Alps approaching the sea, towards the Adriatic Coast with its miles long sandy beaches.

TOUR PROFILE: The tour from Villach to Grado is an easy tour. It goes along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. The tour is suitable for children over 14 years.

Hand-out of travel documents and rental bikes (if booked) at the arrival hotel. Parking according to availability directly at the hotel (payable on site). Free public parking is available at the "Willroider Parkplatz" (SEZ-Straße) or the parking garages at Villach Main Station (approx. € 68/week/car, payable on site) or the underground parking garage "Contipark Parkhaus Zentrum" (approx. € 12/night, payable on site, Hausergasse 13). Overnight stay in the 4☼☼☼☼Hotels City or equivalent.  

Car-free and with only a slight/continuous ascent, the route continues beautifully through forests and charming villages along/near the Gail stream to Arnoldstein. Continue to the day's destination, Valbruna (German: Wolfsbach). Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼hotel. 

Today, the heart of the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path awaits you; you cycle through the narrow valley of the Fella River on the old railway line to Pontebba; after a short stretch of road, you continue to your destination for the day. Overnight stay in a 3☼☼☼hotel.

Partly car-free and close to the Tagliamento River or on side roads, the route takes you 
past  Osoppo  and  Buia  through  the  fertile  Friuli  countryside  to  the  day's  destination,  a 
magnificent trading town with numerous sights (Piazza della Liberta/Matteotti, Duomo, old 
town centre). Overnight stay in a 4 ☼☼☼☼ hotel. 

On  the  cycle  paths  from  the  city  center  into  the  fertile  surrounding  countryside  and through romantic villages like Pavia to Palmanova, a Venetian fortress town (16 th  century) with  a  Piazza  Grande,  cathedral,  numerous  Renaissance  palaces,  and  completely preserved city walls. Continue via Cervignano to Aquileia, the former imperial residence of the Roman Empire (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Through impressive scenery, you reach the old port town of Grado across the lagoon. Overnight stay in a 4 ☼☼☼☼ hotel or in a 3 ☼☼☼ S hotel. 

Journey  home  or  booking  of  additional  nights.  Back  transfer  (persons  included)  from 
Grado (near the hotel at a central meeting point) to Villach.

Per bus: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday (full season) from the central piazza (approx. 
5-12 minutes from the hotel) to Villach (arrival approx. 12 - 2 p.m.). 
Remaining days: own return journey to Villach.  

Return transfer of customers own bikes  for additional charge  
 cannot be held liable for any damage, etc., to own bicycles during the entire cycling tour or during transport (exclusion of liability).

Only in combination with return passenger transfers (train/bus) booked through us and subject to availability (limited places). 
Procedure for bus return: the bikes are transported as part of the bus journey to Villach  
(= customer and bike must be transferred together).

Customers own bikes (insured value up to max. € 1.500,-) with a rim width of more than  
5 cm can only be taken on request. If the customer's own bike is not registered in advance, return transport may not be possible.
